Two Cows

Visiting the farm, I’d leave both families, the repetition of various histories, history repeating itself in each new generation – and go walk in the hills. That day, still not ready for the indoors I visited the cattle yard. Strangers drove by with the predictable shout: ‘’look, there’s a new cow!’’

Cows don’t normally receive congrats but perhaps this one would’ve been pleased.

The ways of beasts and men. We see the pretty, the cow cleans up the mess. Later, when she’s no longer useful, we don’t see the mess, just the steaks.
You put this so well in a raw context, on the edge of the hills where the relationship could still just be one of understanding. Here, now, people still fawn over baby cows, but only the show babies. Most are out of sight in fattening pens.
Wonderful – I like the matter of fact down to earth feeling of your haiku after all the noise and emotion of the human world.

I like your cow tale. Those were the “good ol’ days” back when kids regularly visited thier grandparents. And the kids tired of the company and found diversions. Your walk in the hills and the visits with the animals. Your Haiku was a shock as often is in the Haibun.

I’ve seen the wonder of calves being born. I grew up in Missouri farmland.

Spring was a time for lots of new cows. Best not to get attached, though, they would soon be sold.
I’ve watched farm cows give birth .. as a child it was frightening and exciting wrapped in one huge emotion. Enjoy your week, stay healthy.
