34Artmaking: I prefer working in oil paint. I keep a set of acrylics for sketching and for works on paper. Oil paint has a flexibility that I find lacking in acrylic. It is also a case of keeping to the medium one learnt in.
My efforts at writing is new and am still at the crawling stage. Through writing (and making art) with an audience in mind, keeps one dedicated to deliver work of quality.
I believe all artmaking stems from a wish to explore spirituality.
My reading is diverse. I think my all time favourite female authors are Doris Lessing (The Golden Notebook) Violette le Duc (La Batarde) and Margaret Atwood (The Cat’s Eye).
Male authors vary – JM Coetzee (English South African), Jean Genet (French) and Karel Schoeman (Afrikaans South African).
Otherwise my time is devoted to a cat named Charlie that drives me nuts some of the time and teaches me how to love all of the time.

I agree with you about the medium you started out with – for me that’s watercolour and the first painting I clicked on in your artworks page was a watercolour! I love your photos and paintings of water flowing – it fascinates me too…

Good to hear art’s good on the other side of the planet too. Your books—all of them–are great. Text and texture, collage and brush work, form and content all well contrasted, balanced and played. Keep at it.
Do you use computers? If not, why? I do, even though I began as a painter. A 40 yr. stint in newspapers got me out of that practice. These days, I use photoshop and it has become second nature to me. It has some advantages to oil I like, and its disadvantages, I can live with.
I like your butterfly-joined bas-relief carved frames too, I’ve done some of that myself.
I was introduced to you through a blog called So Very Very. The owner’s name momentarily escapes me. I appreciate your comments about my work. For the book on the comparison between Saartjie Baartman and Marilyn Monroe, I used the basic Powerpoint equivalent to work out the layout and the wording but printed the book by hand using the linocut method. I thought I would be ‘cheating’ if I simply printed it out. I’d love a photoshop programme but won’t use it exclusively to make art with. Heaven knows, once I get the programme I’d probably use it extensively. There’s plenty digital art that’s appealing.
I just made a frame again for the first time in a long time for an artwork that’s going on exhibition. I mean to post it as soon as my internet connection speeds up. I live in a remote area and it sometimes just goes away. I enjoy direct mark making on a surface, whether it’s canvas or paper and thankfully do not or will not have a 40 year stint in newspapers to ‘cure’ me of it. The once or twice that I used photoshop on other people’s computers, I’ve been impressed with the range of drawing tools it has. There’s no way one can do that with a pencil or charcoal or paintbrush. I currently work in acrylic mostly due to the mixed media work, but were trained in oils and it will always be my first love.

So I decided it was a fluke. You’re the second South African I meet on WordPress that now lives in England. If I could, I would move there too but the wherewithal is lacking. I really had wanted to ask you a long time.. To me your name sounds Finish… is there anything true in that?
It’s Spanish in origin I believe. Strange how things work, you’re the second person in so many days to ask me about it. It means ‘stone’ or ‘rock’. There are many variations on the original Pedro … Petra, Petro & Petru (in other languages). The city of Petra in Jordan is aptly named because it’s been carved from a mountain side! I’m an Afrikaans-speaking South African and was named after my maternal grandfather. Never knew him but according to my mother he was a good man, so I’m honoured to bear his name.

Thank you very much! My internet connection has gone very slow or even disappear at times so it hasn’t been easy to post new works. It’s encouraging to know that what one does is appreciated.
