The cat, the Bird and I

We were in the carport; (there’s no car) the cat, the bird and I. I was at some chores, the cat was eyeing the lizard which had alreay lost its tail to her and neither of us yet noticed the bird, high up on the trellis.

Found the lid of the municipal bin! Ha! In the creeper I let grow wild for aesthetic reasons. I swept the concrete floor in places for form’s sake. Stood around seeing what’s to see, watching the cat watching the lizard I broke into song. One I sang while she was gone so long. (I’m not a good singer and took licence, stayed with Hallelujah) It came from my chest and the bird sounded. Surprised I broke off, so did the bird, took up the song and so did the bird. By now my intelligent cat was watching me, ignoring the bird she knew was out of reach. My cat was looking at me, her eyes round and full, her gaze – remembered!

Steadying my buckling knees, holding on to the gate and the Mother of God I close my eyes and sang. The bird, the cat and I.

Beautiful yet often misunderstood, prejudged and unjustly despised animals, cats are.
You speak facts.
I like to think so.
This is so captivating to read… love the interplay between all the actors, you, the poor lizard the bird and mostly your cat.
Thanks Björn.
Love the story lines that entwine into this scenario….the lost lid, the lizard’s poor tail, the song remembered. Such an interesting haibun.
Thank you!
What a glorious story, and such a way to relate it!
Smiles. Thanks Jane.
My pleasure. One of mine (the dim one) caught a lizard yesterday and screeched to be rescued.
😂 Charlie once, very sheepish, came for help, a lizard hanging from the fur at her neck. I deposited the lizard in the garden next door. Charlie went for a nap, angelic expression while she slept! They’re so funny sometimes.
They are very strange for hunters. Trixie goes out in the meadow, kills stuff and eats it. Ninnie is afraid of outside, stays in the attic and chases the lizards that live up there. She panics when she catches one and screams for help.
😂😂😂😂😂
Oh this is so adorable. I like the format of this haibun, too.
What a delightful story told here!
I love this. The perfect trio (quartet?) (K)
Thanks Kerfe!
This captures the moment!
WOW, a duet with a bird and a cat for audience and the lizard ran away with what was left of his tail.I would remember that experience for a loooong time. Wonderful
Thanks! Smiles.
Nice one. Its uncanny the way birds respond to allelulia.
Much💛love
Lusciously surreal. Well done!
And so it was!
What a wonderful moment of personal beauty, captured. Thanks for this.

What a beautiful, sweet kitty. Hey, Charlie!
She’s great!
