Eve
11April 22, 2019 by petrujviljoen
why, I wonder, am I given
a mind to only be told, no
blind faith is required – listen!
‘tis Eve who put us in prison
gates, locked, angels to and fro
why, I wonder, am I given
an Eden closed for admission
round, bound and around do we go
blind faith is required. Listen!
but humanity is driven
circling, blaming, madly – though
I wonder why I am given
the presence of mind to reason.
how to not ask, to not want to know …
– Blind faith is required! Listen!
Eve, no postscript of God, riven
contemplating her heritage
she wonders at this, the given
– Blind faith is required!! Listen!!

I’m so sorry, I missed this first time round. I’m going back through all the glorious villanelles, and was so pleased to find this one! I love the urgency of your voice here, and the increasing intensity of your punctuation. Thank you for sharing. Sorry to be so late responding.
Thanks Sarah!
The tension of the competing thoughts made for a compelling read. 🙂
Thanks Barry.
The contradictions are rampant. I really like the start and stop rhythm of this. It’s just right for the despair. (K)
Well done form.
Pondering the ridiculousness of blind faith, esp. that with counter-evidence, not even lack of. I like that. Or at least, that is what I assume you are saying and that you are not going after poor Eve. Smile.
Thought, since this is feedback poetry: This line puzzled me, “Eve, no postscript of God, riven” — both the post-script and riven. Remove the parenthesis and you get “Eve riven” or was it Eve’s postscript by God riven? Either way, it slowed me down while the rest flowed very nicely indeed.
Thanks Sabio – I’ll see how to smooth it out a bit. And you assume correctly.
Strong words ’tis Eve who put us in prison’. Maybe Adam should have stayed with his first wife, Lilith? I guess we are not taught this in Sunday school. Food for thought. Beautiful.
Indeed we weren’t Susan.
Bravo!
Thanks!
