Sonnet IV

January 20, 2019 by petrujviljoen

skunk, hung by its tail on barbed wire,
contorting, churning as if on fire.
In panic and fear it turned on itself,
while spitting, snarling, it ignored the skelf

embedded in its jaw, soon it’ll bleed.
The skunk was put there to see what it’ll do.
Those who are smirking has booked a ring seat,
lots have been drawn while some began to boo

Motive? The man must’ve been cowed.
Been told he’s unwelcome. By a woman!
He ordered together a rent-a-crowd
not knowing he proved to be inhuman.

the crowd didn’t know they’ve also been played
a mere show, a joke, while the skunk was flayed.

Nice lines: “He ordered together a rent-a-crowd
not knowing he proved to be inhuman.”

    Tell me it’s Let’s Pretend!

Also thought of lynching. Mob mentality. (K)

  4. Rent-a-mob and the image of the skunk is horrifying…
it made me think of lynching actually…. and some of the images made me also think of Desolation Row my favorite Bob Dylan poem….

“they sold pictures of the hanging…” is one of the most memorable lines.

  5. susanmehr says:

Sad and dark and horrifying to think there will always be spectators that can be wielded to watch and do nothing.

  6. Horrible. I can so easily imagine this. Rent-a-mob.
