Call Card – Quadrille for Dverse
25December 5, 2016 by petrujviljoen
Where you talked over me,
over who I was, who I meant
to be for you. And her (and her
and her). About, behind, beyond
at times but always in absence
of I so discussed. Words I was
left with:
calling cards
as scars
…………………
Linked to Dverse
Strong, powerful quadrille. Layered with depth and inference.
By talking over you, he deprived himself of ever really seeing and appreciating you and who you could have been for each other. His loss!
Gossip as wounds/scars. Great metaphor!
‘Where you talked over me’ just grabbed me in the beginning. Then the depth of the whole piece and the calling cards as scar was brilliant at the end. Well Done.
Thank you Susan! How are you?
so intriguing..the calling cards as scars…
I like the structure of the poem, taking the meaning to different levels.
I liked the idea of “calling cards as scars”.
Don’t call us we’ll call you.
🙂
This is so well done. When you talked over me….and then you add the other dimensions (repetition but with different words). And then the repetition of exact words (her)….the hurt juxtaposed to the idea of a calling card. I think of those as something that one passes on cheerfully and here, it is anything but that. Well done!
Calling cards as scars – that ending just hit me ~ Good work with the challenge ~
Thank you Grace.
I love the way this begins, as if part of a larger conversation…perhaps one that has only happened in the mind. 😉 LOVE scars as calling cards (and vice-versa).
… and perhaps not.
You took the prompt to a whole new level! Kudos!
Thanks!
And then there’s the more ordinary sense of calling cards, as identifying or announcing someone. As you probably mean, with the scars left behind to identify that person who talked over, etc.. An arresting poem, the conclusion startling and powerful.
Thanks Rosemary!
Ah.. this is one your best.. the repetition of her and her, the calling card… very good.
I’ve been on an online writing course, novel and short story, through Novoed, same place that did the Walt Whitman course … was hoping it would show.
“Calling cards” huh? D’You know what a Calling Card is? In mafia circles? It’s a debt to be repaid. Nice one P!
No I didn’t know! But it fits my theme. There’s mafia and then there’s the closed group circles …
They do you a favour, like “tidy” something up for you, and in the future you get a card and an order to do a favour for them in return, but you are removed from their associates so the cops don’t suspect you. Maybe plant a bomb, or carry a gun through customs or hide someone….
Too much information!
