Ai Weiwei at the RA: Everything is art. Everything is politics

December 3, 2015 by petrujviljoen

A very thoughtful and comprehensive essay on Ai Wei Wei.

That's How The Light Gets In

Ai Weiwei’s work is not unusual in drawing upon the artist’s own life experience for inspiration, but there is none of the solipsism of Tracey Emin’s Bed in his art. Ai Weiwei’s installations, sculptures and videos – which I saw last week in his powerful, moving and deeply serious exhibition currently at the Royal Academy – affirm his  unwavering commitment to human rights and freedom of expression.

Everything is art. Everything is politics.

  1. Can Ai Wei Wei be an anti-establishment dissident over there and a pro-establishment darling over here? Yes, as its all politics. But is he a just politicized variant of Jeff “Everything is art. Everything is money” Koons? I hope not, on the contrary I see Daumier and Disney in his work as well as Duchamp … all good. thanks for the the link.

Artist Statement or rationale or why do I do what I do

I make art, I read a lot and I'm now trying to write as well. Otherwise I belong to a cat by the name of Charlie that drives me nuts sometimes and other times makes me melt with love for her.
