Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Rochelle Wissoff-fields is a get together of writers indulging in flash fiction. A story of 100 words. Join us, it’s fun! If you think thinking is fun, that is. Photograph is courtesy of and copyright to Lora Mitchell

The video camera focussed on Mary’s relieved face, her eyes momentarily closed, exhausted. They thought it best to not record the more brutal aspects of the birthing.

”It’s a girl!” exclaimed the doctor. Joseph whipped his head round to the newborn. ” Oh, sweet Jesus!” ”You said … ” spluttered Mary. ”All the sonars showed …” stammered Joseph. Incredulous, the doctor stared.

Laughing, they watched until the camera centred on the Madonna lilies, now planted in their garden. They found a name for their daughter only once they were home. Juno, instead of Jonathan. The miracle that defeated science.

We actually know that story in reverse …A good friend too.
Thanks for your visit to my Friday Fictioneers piece March 20th.

I convinced my wife not to find out what our first child was, but with the second she would not wait. I know science continues to get closer to perfection, but there can always be a surprise. A very realistic story.

    Dear Petru,

A far out take on the prompt and upon the way man forms legends out of nothingness and then perpetuates them.

    Aloha,

    Doug

Aloha! I must admit I was a bit wary of people’s response to the story. Everybody received it really well. Thank you for reading. By the way, your story about the Blade Runner, was going to mention on your blog that we, here in South Africa, don’t really want to talk about Blade Runners at present, what with Reeva Steenkamp not being able to speak for herself any longer. I believe the case of Oscar Pistorius is international news?

Ha Ha! I know all about that mistake, we made it ourselves!

  5. Dear Petru,
We have some lovely birth photos from our sons. No thank you on the videos. I enjoyed your cleverly written story.
    Shalom,
    Rochelle
PS Only one ‘s’ in Wisoff 😉

Thanks for liking my story Rochelle. I’m going to paste the spelling of your name to the wall! I keep getting it wrong.

  6. What a nice tale, I have been told that what you descrbe is a real miracle. Usually if the sonar says it’s a boy it is a boy. If it says a girl it could be boy… Very nice take, and I can not understant people who want to have the whole thing on video…. 🙂

  7. claireful says:

Very clever. I like that idea – Mary and Joseph have a daughter… what will she do differently, I wonder.

Love it – Mary and Joseph had a baby girl! I thought this was going in another direction but love the direction it took. I also loved the videoing of the mother’s face – brilliant stuff.

  9. Sandra says:

Great take on the prompt. Well done.

  10. I love the twist they received a girl instead of the boy they expected. The new Madonna i suspect. Well done.

  11. You did a masterful job of working in all the names and so on. An creative take! And please thank them for not recording everything! We had friends who, after our first daughter was born, wanted to get together and show us their birthing video. That was a big, “No thank you!!” We did NOT have a video nor if we had, for some bizarre reason, would we have shared it!!

It’s a very private moment actually. Vulnerable enough for a woman with doctors and nurses and often a clinical atmosphere in which to give birth to a baby. A miracle everytime actually.
